The Level 3 Award in First Line Management aims to give practising or potential Managers the foundation for their formal development in this role. The programme aimes to assist participants in gaining the basic knowledge required by a manager and to develop basic management skills.

ILM LEVEL 4 AWARD IN MANAGEMENT (32hrs) PENDING APPROVAL

The ILM Level 4 Award in Management aims to give managers the foundation for their formal development in this role. The qualification does this by exploring the middle manager role, and to develop the skills needed in such a role and also to prepare candidates for the more rigorous demands of study at the higher levels.

This unique Award has been developed in response to an identified need for those learners who wish to progress from a Level 3 qualification, but who may find the demands of a Level 5 (equating to second year degree level) too ambitious. Thus, this qualification forms a valuable bridge from Level 3 to Level 5, with the additional benefit of allowing 8 credits to be carried forward to a Level 5 Certificate or Diploma - thus making it particularly attractive to organisations seeking an incremental ladder of development.

General Information

    Level 3 qualifications are suitable for . . .
  • team leaders and first line managers, especially those who are new to the role, or who need to enhance their people leading skills, and/or
  • individuals who would not necessarily be identified as managers or team leaders, but who have a leadership role or need leadership skills at work, in the community, in sport or recreation
    Level 4 qualifications are suitable for . . .
  • practising or aspiring managers with the opportunity to meet the assessment demands, and
  • those with a background that will enable them to benefit from the programme - (Level 2 Key Skills
  • Literacy and Numeracy or equivalent)
  • Learners who are sponsored by their employers and those without such sponsorship are equally eligible.
    Level 5 qualifications are suitable for . . .
  • middle managers, especially those who are new to the role, or who need to enhance their people leading skills, and/or
  • individuals who would not necessarily be identified as managers, but who have a more senior leadership role or need more advanced leadership skills at work, in the community, in sport or recreation

Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for these programmes. However, in order to benefit from this programme, candidates should normally possess communication skills appropriate to the level of qualification they seek to achieve. Certificate candidates require the opportunity to practice leadership consistently within a workplace or similar setting.

Assessment
Assessment in all Awards is by Work-based Assignment.

Progression
Where a candidate has completed an Award in Management and later wishes to progress to the Certificate in Management at the same level, then exemption from Unit L1/S1, as appropriate, is granted in its entirety, including assessment. This applies within a period of 3 years from completion of the relevant Award.

Candidates may progress to other programmes leading to various leadership, management development or coaching/mentoring qualifications at higher levels.

ILM Membership
Successful completion of the Level 3 Award in First Line Management, the Level 4 or Level 5 Award in Management may provide eligibility for Associate Membership (AMInstLM) of the Institute of Leadership & Management - depending upon actual experience.

Guidelines, according to the New Qualifcation Framework (NQF):
  • ILM Level 3 operates at an equivalent of A Level and BTEC Diplomas, Certficates and Awards
  • ILM Level 4 operates at a post-A Level standard
  • ILM Level 5 is at Foundation Degree Level.
Credits from certain units can, in some cases, be used to count towards higher qualifications.
